Finkenriek cemetery lies in the south of Wilhelmsburg, right by the dyke. Since 2020 it has had a new Islamic burial section with its own washing and farewell building. Both were built as compensation for the construction of the A26 motorway and funded by DEGES.

The washing house (architect Medine Altiok) has separate entrances for men and women, a washing room, a farewell room, two waiting rooms and a covered area for the funeral prayer. Graves and buildings face Mecca.

Burial without a coffin, in a shroud, is permitted at Hamburg's state cemeteries. For a burial in the Islamic section the soil is replaced to a depth of two metres so that the earth is untouched.

The cemetery opened in 1957 and has around 8,500 grave plots. Since 1 January 2025 it has been part of Hamburger Friedhöfe (AöR, the public cemetery authority); before that the Bezirksamt Hamburg-Mitte (district office) was responsible. Older phone numbers and email addresses found online may therefore be out of date.
