Islamic burial in Hamburg

A death in the family. Here is what to do now.

Step by step, with all phone numbers, addresses and costs. For Muslim families in Hamburg, with a directory covering the whole of Germany.

The first steps

Based on the Hamburg Burial Act and Islamic practice. Each step links to the detailed guide.

  1. 1
    In the first hours

Call a doctor, inform family and community

A doctor issues the medical death certificate (Todesbescheinigung). Nothing can proceed without it. In a hospital or care home, the institution takes care of this.

  2. 2
    On the same day

    Call a Muslim funeral director

The funeral director collects the deceased and takes care of cooling, washing and the formalities. Check whether there is a burial fund membership (DITIB, VIKZ, IGMG).

  3. 3
    On the first day

Decide: burial in Hamburg or repatriation

In Hamburg, burial without a coffin is permitted. Repatriation requires a Leichenpass (mortuary passport) from the Bezirksamt Wandsbek (district office) and usually a zinc coffin.

  4. 4
    By the third working day

Register the death at the Standesamt

You need the medical death certificate, ID, birth and marriage certificates. The death certificate (Sterbeurkunde) costs €19.50; the copy for the pension is free of charge.

  5. 5
    Before the burial

    Washing, shroud, funeral prayer

Ghusl and kafan at the cemetery's washing house or at the funeral director's. The janazah prayer takes place in the mosque or at the grave. The funeral director reserves the grave and the date.

  6. 6
    Within ten days

The burial and what comes after

In Hamburg, an earth burial must take place within ten days. Afterwards: notify the pension office and insurers; the gravestone is set no earlier than a few months later.
