A doctor issues the medical death certificate (Todesbescheinigung). Nothing can proceed without it. In a hospital or care home, the institution takes care of this.
The funeral director collects the deceased and takes care of cooling, washing and the formalities. Check whether there is a burial fund membership (DITIB, VIKZ, IGMG).
In Hamburg, burial without a coffin is permitted. Repatriation requires a Leichenpass (mortuary passport) from the Bezirksamt Wandsbek (district office) and usually a zinc coffin.
You need the medical death certificate, ID, birth and marriage certificates. The death certificate (Sterbeurkunde) costs €19.50; the copy for the pension is free of charge.
Ghusl and kafan at the cemetery's washing house or at the funeral director's. The janazah prayer takes place in the mosque or at the grave. The funeral director reserves the grave and the date.
