The funeral prayer (Cenaze Namazı)
How the funeral prayer proceeds and where it is performed in Hamburg: mosque, cemetery, Finkenriek.
The funeral prayer (Arabic Salat al-Janazah, Turkish Cenaze Namazı) is a communal obligation. It is performed standing, without bowing or prostration, with four takbirs. The deceased lies in front of the imam, facing Mecca. All who wish to be present are welcome; non-Muslims may also take part respectfully.
Where in Hamburg: in the mosque community, usually after one of the daily prayers, especially after the Friday prayer. Or directly at the cemetery: Finkenriek has a covered area with a prayer stone (Totenstein) by the washing house. Öjendorf has a granite table; Ohlsdorf holds the prayer in the open air by the burial section. The funeral director and the community coordinate place and time.
If you do not know the prayer: stand behind the imam and follow his movements. The supplications may be said silently or in your own language.
